When it comes to maintaining a picture-perfect lawn, lawn aeration is key. The process of aerating, or perforating the soil with thousands of small holes, makes it easier for air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots.

The result? Denser, more vibrant turf.

How does lawn aeration work?

Lawn aeration is simply the process of removing cores of soil—1” to 3” in depth—throughout your entire yard. The goal of all lawn aeration is to control thatch, loosen compacted soils, create pockets for new growth, and make it easier for air, nutrients, and water to reach the root zone.

Control thatch

Thatch is the layer of organic material—mostly dead grass that has yet to decompose—that lies between the green blades you see and the root system below. It’s ideal to have some thatch in your yard, but when it becomes thicker than half an inch, thatch can wreak havoc on your turf.

When too thick, thatch blocks water and nutrients from reaching your lawn’s root system. Not only that, but thatch creates the perfect environment for diseases and pests to fester. Thatch can even impact the way you mow your lawn. Because of its spongy texture, thatch can cause the wheels of your lawnmower to sink, causing it to scalp your lawn.

Lawn aeration helps control thatch by breaking up buildup. If you’re interested in alternative methods to dethatching your lawn, check out our verticutting services.

Loosen compacted soils

In addition to thatch, another threat to your lawn’s health is compacted soil. As soil settles over time, it becomes dense, making it difficult for roots to penetrate the soil deep enough to support new, healthy growth. Eventually, new blades of grass will stop replacing dead blades and your lawn will appear thin and dull.

By perforating the ground, lawn aeration loosens compacted soil and creates new pockets for roots to grow.

Reaching roots

The small pockets left behind by aeration immediately open up the soil to air, water, and nutrients—the three things your grass needs most to thrive. Lawn aeration allows these three elements to go directly to the root zone, resulting in a more vigorous, dense growth.

What is core aeration?

At Picture Perfect Lawn Care, our preferred method of lawn aeration is core aeration. Core aeration is the mechanical removal of cores of soil from the lawn, making the process of lawn aeration reliable and efficient. Plus, when you invite us to aerate your lawn for you, you won’t have to invest in expensive core aeration equipment.
